Puma Capital Group

Niam Vaid reflects on his internship at Puma

Stepping from the world of academia into the corporate arena initially felt like a daunting leap. However, through Puma’s warm, collaborative and engaging atmosphere, I found myself energised and supported, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities on offer.

I was fortunate enough to split my internship between the Marketing and Public Markets (AIM) teams. This unique combination not only allowed me to develop and practice a variety of skills but also gave me the opportunity to work with an array of individuals across the company, which was incredibly exciting. In particular, I had the chance to experience the technical aspects of Puma's AIM VCT product launch while simultaneously learning how these ideas are translated into effective marketing strategies.

Marketing: Shaping Narratives and Building Trust

When I began my internship in the marketing team, I had next to no knowledge of the sector. Fortunately, the team was not only patient but eager to help me learn. They took time out of their busy schedules to explain the various functions of marketing within an investment management firm.

I had the opportunity to work closely with the entire team, from drafting LinkedIn posts to attending meetings with Puma Growth Partner's portfolio companies with Katie, learning about the PR side of the business. Additionally, I worked with Rachel on site events for the AIM VCT product launch, gaining an understanding of event marketing and Alice and Cora introduced me to the digital side where I was able to contribute to the company website.

One of my biggest takeaways was realising how crucial marketing is to the world of investments. Often, financial institutions are viewed through the lens of numbers, spreadsheets, and transactions. However, marketing adds colour and context, transforming technical data into compelling narratives that resonate with clients and investors in a sector where trust and reputation are paramount.

AIM (Public Markets): Learning from the Ground Up

Transitioning from marketing to the AIM team for the second half of my internship was a dynamic shift. It provided me with an in-depth understanding of the volatile nature of the market, where daily RNS releases bring new information that require immediate analysis and adaptation, adding an element of excitement to every day on the team.

I had the privilege of learning directly from Joe and Stuart, two professionals whose meticulous approach to investment decisions was both inspiring and educational. Watching them work together, I gained a deep understanding of the importance of every small decision. Each company we reviewed was analysed with caution and care, and the process was always rooted in solid reasoning. I am grateful for their openness to my questions and willingness to engage in meaningful discussions, helping me grasp not only the technical aspects of the job but also the bigger picture of the public markets landscape.

Beyond the Teams

One of the standout aspects of my internship was the flexibility and openness that allowed me to engage with people across various teams. A huge thanks goes to my buddy, Rachel, whose amiable nature helped me set up chats with various people across the company. Whether it was conversations with Josh and Tom from the Business Development team, Chris from the Property Finance team, Ben, Emily and Charlotte from the Puma Growth Partners team, Marcus from IT, or regular catchups with Cara, I always felt welcomed and eager to learn from their insights. Each conversation added another layer to my understanding of the broader operations at Puma, and I left each discussion with a new perspective on the Investment Management industry.

A special mention must also go to my mentor, Rupert, who took time to help me refine key skills like articulation and leadership. His advice was both instructive and thought-provoking, and his willingness to introduce me to people in his external network are leading to future coffee chats that I’m sure will further shape my thinking about career steps.

The individuals at Puma truly care and I felt valued by everyone around me, and for that I am truly grateful. Thank you to Erica, Katie, Rachel, Cora, Alice, Eleanor, Lucy, Selena, Joe, Stuart and Cara, for your continued support and guidance throughout my internship!
